BCJ 3601 Unit 1 Case Study

Instructions

For this assignment, you will explore the concept of stare decisis and whether it is an inexorable command. Click the link to access “Is Stare Decisis an Inexorable Command?”, and write a case study that answers, at a minimum, the questions listed below.

  • What does the court mean when it says “Stare decisis is not an inexorable command; rather it is a principle of policy and not a mechanical formula of adherence to the latest decision”?
  • What would it mean for the American system of criminal justice if stare decisis actually was an “inexorable command” or a “mechanical formula of adherence to the latest decision”?

Your case study will be a minimum of two pages in length, not counting the title and reference pages. (Your response to each question should be 250–300 words.) Your case study should present an insightful and thorough analysis with strong arguments and evidence.

You are required to use at least two outside resources, one of which may be your textbook. All resources used, including the textbook, must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted material must have accompanying citations. Your case study, including all references, will be formatted in APA style.

a short report

3 pages, at least 2 citations

Write a short report illustrating an example of a project undertaken by a company, municipality, or non-profit organization demonstrating how this project links to the organization’s mission, vision, and values. If possible, show the numerical rationale (NPV, IRR, Payback Period) used as a rationale.

NOTE 1: I have attached an article from PM Journal, which is case study of a project to harmonize practices for the use of IV pumps at a Canadian healthcare center. Although not in the format of Assignment 1, it does contain an example of a project charter, which may be valuable as guidance for your team project, and it does show how the project connects with the overarching mission of the healthcare center.

(Aubry, M., Boulay-Bolduc, M., Richer, M.-C., & Lavoie-Tremblay, M. (2018). Dealing with Uncertainty and Ambiguity in a Complex Project: The Case of Intravenous (IV) Pumps inHealthcare Center. Project Management Journal, 49(1), 110–121. )

How this will be graded:

Structure, Organization, Ease of reading, Grammar: 2 Points

Did you write this to be easy to read? For example, have you avoided huge blocks of text with no headers? Did you use (sparingly but where needed) highlighting (bold, underline, italic text)?

Did you follow the structure of the sample Assignment 1?

Did you follow the advice given in the lectures and From Your Instructor about the format?

Did you follow rules of English grammar, spelling, and syntax? Did you fix errors pointed out via Word’s editing capabilities (e.g. squiggly blue or red underlined text)?

Content: 5 Points

Did you find an interesting project? Did it come across that you yourself seemed interested in the project?

Did you inform the reader about the project so that you could discuss it intelligently with someone else?

Did you link the project to the organization’s mission, vision, and values?

Did you make assertions, such as “this project was a success”, or “this project is used as an example a to how NOT to run a project”.

Did you provide numbers – percentages, monetary amounts, resources used, etc., to make their point? In particular, did you tie into the course content regarding NPV, IRR, Payback Period as suggested?

References and resources: 1 Point

Did you provide at least 2 references to a business journal or scholarly source to make a connection to the principles of mission, vision, values, benefits realization, charter creation, or other project, program, or portfolio concept?

Other things to consider:

Did you add value from your own professional and/or personal experience

Did you make appropriate use of figures and tables in an appendix? Don’t substitute quantity for quality here – one good, relevant, and meaningful small table is worth 100 randomly inserted graphs and charts.

Examples (for structure ideas, just to be familiar with what has been submitted – not to be copied of course)

It is true researchers must have the correct training when doing special studies. They must know what they are looking for in each detail. We always want to make sure there is absolutely no bias when different studies are being done. We want to make sure each portion of the study is done correctly. When working in the ER, we always must make sure everything is done properly. Nurses must make sure all assessments are done correctly. These are very important when speaking with doctors. This helps with the plan of care for each patient The plan of care must be correct for each particular patient.

research foundation week 9

Developing a research study begins by identifying a research problem, which could be an area of concern or a difficultly that persists and that needs a meaningful and thorough investigation. The problem statement lays out the logic of the research project. Once an under-explored research problem is selected and identified, a research question is created to represent the topic or focus that needs to be researched. The literature might not address this question or it might provide incomplete answers to the question. The research question leads to the kind of data that need to be collected to respond to the question. The researcher needs to maintain methodological congruency and alignment by actively creating a link among research problem, purpose, research question, and approach; and by reflecting on how to best address the research question. Once the research problem, purpose, and question are determined, it is important to select the sample for the study (i.e., individuals, units, and/or settings being studied), and then identify how to obtain the sample through the use of selection criteria and type of sampling strategy.

In this Discussion, you will build on your qualitative scenario and expand your sampling strategy section to specifically identify selection criteria.

To Prepare

  • Review this week’s Learning Resources. Pay particular attention to the characteristics of qualitative research, examples of qualitative research problems and questions, and considerations for selecting a sample.
  • Reflect on the qualitative research scenario you discussed in previous weeks.
  • Identify areas you need to build on and refine, and think about the specific selection criteria for your sample.
  • Alignment of scenario elements is important. See the Examples of Aligned and Misaligned Scenarios document, which can be downloaded from the Week 9 Learning Resources area of the classroom.
  • Discussion posts are pass/fail but have minimum criteria to pass. See the Discussion Rubric to ensure you understand the pass/fail criteria.

This week is only about the qualitative scenario. Repost, or build on or refine as needed, your qualitative scenario using the following headings and according to the italicized instructions given for each element:

Program of Study: Identify your specific program of study and, if applicable, your concentration area.

Social Problem: Briefly describe the social problem or phenomenon of interest. Typically, this can be done in 3 or fewer sentences.

Qualitative Research Problem: Complete the following sentence: The scholarly community does not know…

Qualitative Research Purpose: Typically, this is a 1-sentence statement addressed by completing the following sentence: The purpose of this qualitative study is…

Qualitative Research Question: Typically, this is a 1-sentence question unless you have more than one research question.

Theory or Conceptual Framework: Identify a specific psychological or sociological theory or specific aspects of a conceptual framework that guides the scenario. Briefly describe how the specific theory or conceptual framework guides your research question and will aid in interpretation of results.

Qualitative Research Design: Identify a specific qualitative research design. Do not use broad terms, such as descriptive design, exploratory design, hermeneutics, lived experience, and so on. Briefly describe how the selected design fits your scenario.

Qualitative Sampling Strategy: Be specific.

Sampling Criteria: Identify specific eligibility criteria for your sample, and briefly defend the need for the eligibility criteria.

Qualitative Data Collection Method: Be specific.

Note: Use proper APA format. If helpful, support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources.

This is an example on how you need to do the assignment but use a different a different program of study. Please follow the sample.
