Discussion – Federal, state and local advocacy
There are many advocacy options that I could take to help improve healthcare in my state and federal government. One example is volunteering with an advocacy group that advocates for better health care resources and access, such as a non-profit focused on increasing Medicaid coverage or funding community health centers. You could also reach out to your local representative to tell them about my experience with inadequate healthcare. This will help to show why healthcare reform is so important. It may be possible to offer specific suggestions for solutions, such as bills to expand coverage and make prescription drugs more affordable.
Events that raise awareness of healthcare disparities in the community and invite speakers could be organized. In addition, I can attend hearings, give testimony before legislative committees or provide expertise to them on certain healthcare issues, such as access and affordability. Finally, I can join an alliance of advocates across the country working towards the common goal of improving healthcare through federal and state legislation.
