While a quantitative study analyzes numerical data statistically to derive conclusions, a qualitative study collects and analyses data in a descriptive way. For example, a quantitative research study might look at how many patients reported decreased pain levels after taking a certain medication while a qualitative research study would examine those same patients’ experiences with the drug in terms of side effects, efficacy, etc. Quantitative studies usually involve large samples sizes which are then used to make generalizations about the population being studied, whereas qualitative studies rely on smaller sample sizes and are more focused on gaining an understanding of individuals’ lived experiences rather than making broader inferences.
Each method has its advantages and disadvantages in terms of obtaining precise results. Although quantitative research provides insights into large trends and patterns it can not always be comprehensive. On the other hand, qualitative studies might yield more specific results that may only apply to specific populations. However they are less generalizable because not enough people have been included for statistical analysis. Both approaches are valuable and must be considered when investigating health topics.
