Family systems theory considers the family to be a system made up of many interrelated components. Each member has an impact on the other. This approach focuses on how family members interact and their impact on the functioning of the whole family.
To initiate positive changes in a family system, it’s important to identify patterns of behavior or communication that are contributing to negative outcomes within the family. Family Systems Theory techniques can be applied to individual member’s behavior to encourage positive changes that will lead to a better family function over the long-term. One example is helping everyone recognize their contribution to the problem; encouraging open communication between members; exploring different roles in the system that can help each member; and working together on solving problems as a team. These interventions are able to foster greater family bonds and help create better problem-solving methods among family members.
