For the final project in this course, you will develop a patient safety presentation that evaluates an information management strategy in place (ideally in your workplace) to determine if it improves patient safety and patient outcomes. To help you develop this presentation, you will submit three milestones throughout the course. For this first milestone, choose your information technology and management topic. Describe your chosen topic and give your rationale for choosing this topic (i.e., why it is important to your workplace, how it improves patient safety, etc.). Submit your topic selection for feedback and approval from your instructor.

1. Electronic Health Records (EHRs: EHRs enable healthcare professionals to have instant access to patient data, which can reduce the chance of errors in medical care and improve patient outcomes. EHRs can be evaluated in the workplace to identify potential areas of improvement. This will help ensure patient safety.
2. Medical Management Systems: Mistakes in medication administration are common causes of harm to patients. The medication management system automates the process of administering medication, provides real-time alerts about potential drug interactions and ensures accurate dosing.
3. Clinical Decision Support Systems: CDSS (Clinical Decision Support Systems) can help healthcare professionals make clinical decisions. They provide evidence-based advice, alerts providers to possible adverse events and drug interactions, as well as diagnostic support. A workplace evaluation can identify potential areas of improvement, and help ensure patient safety.
4. Telemedicine: Telemedicine allows patients to access healthcare remotely. This reduces the need for visits in person and improves patient outcomes. You can evaluate the telemedicine system in your company and identify opportunities for improvement.

Consider the unique needs of your organization and the ways that the information management strategy could address these to increase patient safety and outcomes. Discuss your chosen topic with your instructor once you have decided on it. Get feedback and make sure it is in line with course requirements.
