Interventions in crisis and mental health for victims of disasters
Due to the specific nature of the disorder, interventions used in psychiatric crisis situations are not the same as those that are used in other emergencies such as natural disasters. In order to stabilize an individual in a psychiatric emergency, you need to first treat their medical condition. The treatment may include medication administration or mental counseling. This can be time-consuming and could result in long-term problems.
In contrast, intervention during disasters usually involves immediate response plans. The affected areas must be stabilized as soon as possible to reduce potential harm. This would involve providing food, water and shelter to those whose infrastructure is damaged. Additionally, these interventions often require coordination between multiple agencies in order provide adequate assistance at an acceptable speed – something which is not necessary when treating psychiatric crises.
