To assess a patient for abuse, I use a variety of strategies. These include performing a physical examination in order to detect any signs of injury and speaking privately with the patient to inquire about their alleged incidents. Also, reviewing the medical records for evidence to support or discredit the claim. I am able to gather as many details as possible, without placing anyone at greater risk.
Remember that abuse victims might not always be willing or able report it. This is why non-judgmental querying and giving the victim space to express themselves can build trust. As a support service provider, I offer therapy and referrals to individuals who may need them. We can use these strategies to ensure victims’ voices are heard, as well as providing resources for them so that they can start the healing process.
