Discussion Board: Confederate States of America (1.5-hour long movie)
There are indeed relationships between the work environment of the pro-slavery CSA economy (Confederate States of America), and the present workplace in America. They share a common feature: both systems heavily rely on an exploitative culture for economic gain. Both cases have seen unfair treatment of certain groups or individuals, sometimes based on race and social class. In slavery, African Americans did not have any rights and suffered from extreme conditions. Today they are still at disadvantage because of systemic racism, lack of resources and limited opportunities. Additionally, while women’s roles within society have changed significantly since then, there is still an unequal balance of power when it comes to gender representation in many workplaces which can lead to similar forms of exploitation as those seen under slavery. There have been more instances of workers being considered disposable commodities without any regard for safety or well-being. This all shows that U.S. workplaces are very similar in terms of exploitation and injustice.
