A patient became very angry at me and started yelling at me as I tried to help him. This was just one example of many situations that I’ve had to deal with. At first, this outburst made me feel intimidated and uncertain about my response. However, afterward, I realized my responses should focus on quality and professionalism. Instead of being defensive or exacerbating the situation, my response was to be calm and approach their concerns with respect. Both parties reached an agreement, and we were able move forward in a positive manner.
Looking back, I think my response could have been more positive if it had included open-ended questions. If faced with the same situation in the future, I will use active listening techniques to help the patient understand their feelings and gain clarity before responding. Empathy for the patient’s experience can help foster a respectable dialogue that will ultimately result in better outcomes.
