A patient/professional relationship that is effective has mutual respect and trust. The patient can freely express their worries without being judged. A dialogue between the parties can facilitate better communication and understanding of each other’s goals. Both parties can come to a mutual understanding and agreement when making care decisions. A healthy professional/patient relationship also encourages an individualized approach that takes into account a person’s unique needs rather than applying a one-size-fits-all solution which could have unintended consequences.
A poor relationship between a patient and a health professional can also have negative consequences for both. Fear of being judged or dismissed by healthcare professionals can make patients reluctant to talk about their concerns. This could lead to them becoming less willing to seek the necessary treatment. Furthermore, if providers lack empathy or fail to take into consideration certain aspects related to an individual’s situation then it could result in inadequate care being provided which would ultimately be harmful for patients in the long run. To ensure that patients receive the right treatment, we must foster strong working relationships with professionals.
