Psychotherapy helps patients to change their attitudes, beliefs and behaviours. It can help improve your mental health. This is done by giving individuals the tools and support they need in order to solve their own problems. Therapy can include talking about conflicts and examining the underlying beliefs which may have influenced certain actions. Psychotherapists can also offer guidance and suggestions on how to deal with challenging emotions, or more efficient strategies for handling stressful situations.
The brain’s emotion regulation regions, including the prefrontal cortex (and amygdala) are thought to be affected by psychotherapy. Although this activity may help to reduce the symptoms of mental illness, research on its neurological mechanism remains inconclusive. However, it is similar to psychopharmacology’s evidence that specific neurotransmitter receptors can be targeted to produce desired effects.
