How do issues of diversity and global perspectives of care contribute to your understanding of health equity as it relates to this population?

The elderly, particularly those with low income, are more likely to have health problems or be members of minority communities. These people are at greater risk for poorer health due to factors like limited healthcare access, social isolation and inadequacy of housing.

Geriatric nurse practitioners are a specialty that can assist in health promotion and prevention of disease among the older population. My services include comprehensive health screenings, diagnosis and management of chronic diseases, as well as the promotion and maintenance of healthy lifestyle habits. In order to deliver coordinated, culturally sensitive healthcare I will also work with community and other health professionals.

For understanding equity and health in relation to the population, it is important that we consider issues such as diversity and international perspectives on care. You must recognize and consider the specific needs of each culture and the challenges they face. Also, you need to look at the social determinants that impact health, such as poverty, education and lack of resources. I’m able to see the world from a global perspective and identify innovative care methods that could improve outcomes for elderly people.
