One of Issey Miyake’s most radical designs was the Pleats Please collection. The entire line consisted of pleated pieces. It included everything from clothes to bags and hats. He used a technique called “heat-pleating” where fabric is pleated at high temperatures which allowed it to keep its shape when washed making clothing easier to care for than traditional materials. Because some pieces could be folded up into compact packages which made it easy to store and transport, they were designed with sustainability in mind. This collection represented a change in fashion from traditional tailored silhouettes to more casual, loose fitting garments. These styles have become popular as people seek stylish and functional clothing that is both fashionable and practical. Miyake also explored new techniques and materials like heat-pleating.
