The specific healthcare problem and current policies and programs will determine which administrative agency would be most responsible for addressing it. Below are some examples of healthcare problems and agencies that could be involved in solving them.
- Affordable healthcare. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services is responsible for administering Medicare and Medicaid. They are the two main government programs that offer healthcare coverage for millions. CMS also implements provisions of Affordable Care Act (ACA) which is aimed to increase access to affordable healthcare.
- Drug regulation and safety: The Food and Drug Administration is charged with ensuring that drugs and other medical devices sold in America are safe and effective. FDA approves medical devices and new drugs. It also monitors safety after they go on sale and can take action to get rid of products found ineffective or unsafe.
- Mental Health: Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration is responsible for managing mental health in America. SAMHSA makes grants to the states and to other agencies to support mental health treatment programs.
- Disease prevention and control: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is charged with controlling and tracking the spread of infectious diseases within the United States. Through public health programs as well as research, the CDC works with chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease to reduce their incidence.
These are but a handful of examples of healthcare issues and the agencies involved in their resolution. The nature and priorities of each agency will determine the specific responsibility for the given issue.
