Walsh et al. (2015) article titled “An Integrated Review of Interventions to Improve Psychological Outcomes for Family Caregivers of Patients with Dementia” utilized a systematic review approach to synthesize and analyze the results of interventions aimed at improving psychological outcomes for family caregivers of patients with dementia.
Research Design: This study used a systematic literature review to design the research. This allows for the thorough and precise synthesis all studies relevant to this study that have met specific inclusion criteria. A meta-analysis was included in the study, which allowed for pooling effect sizes from different studies.
Sample Selection: This study consisted of 25 randomised controlled trials (RCTs), which met certain inclusion criteria. Inclusion criteria included studies published between 2000-2014 that assessed interventions that improve the psychological well-being of family caregivers for patients with dementia. These were RCT designs.
Data collection methods After screening eligible studies, the researchers extracted data from them using a standardized data extraction method.
Data Analysis Plan: This plan involved the use a narrative approach to summarizing the results of included studies. The descriptive summary of the study characteristics, interventions, and results was done. A meta-analysis was also done to examine studies which reported effects on caregiver burden, anxiety and depression. A random-effects model was used for the meta-analysis. The results were presented with forest plots, effect sizes estimates and effects.
Walsh et al. These methods were appropriate to conduct a systematic evaluation of programs that improve psychological outcomes of caregivers caring for dementia patients’ families. The study’s findings highlight the importance of tailored interventions that address the unique needs of family caregivers and provide support and resources to help them cope with the challenges of caregiving.
