The top five most important countries the United States exported in 2014 were Canada, Mexico China, Japan and Germany. Together, these countries accounted for more than 53% of all US exports in 2014. Canada was the most significant recipient with exports exceeding 250 billion US dollars. Mexico followed closely with imports of nearly 226 Billion USD. With a value of almost 122 billion USD, China was third. Japan and Germany were fifth and sixth respectively with respective values of 83 billion US and 82 billion US.
In 2014, the US imported the largest number of goods from the same five countries. China was the largest importer with an estimated value of 427 billion dollars, followed by Mexico (232 billion) and Canada (233 billion). Japan’s import value was slightly higher than that of its exports at 75million dollars, and Germany had a much greater ratio of imports to exports (111billion USD) in 2014. These figures indicate that the US overall has a positive trade surplus with these five countries, since it is more likely to export than import each year.
