Three-year-old c.e. Hospitalized in the Emergency Department (ED) within minutes
In this situation, the nurse should first verify that the C.E. medication order is correct. The nurse should check if the dose of Augmentin prescribed by the PCP is appropriate for C.E.’s weight of 14 kg and if the frequency and duration of the medication are correct. The nurse should also check for any potential interactions with C.E.’s known allergy to penicillin and any other medications she may be taking.
Any discrepancies, or concerns regarding the medication orders should be discussed with the PCP/Pharmalist to ensure safe medication administration to the patient. The nurse should also ensure that C.E.’s parents understand how to administer the medication, including the proper dosing and frequency, and the importance of completing the full course of antibiotics as prescribed.
