Theory X is an approach to managing employees that assumes they are inherently lazy and need external guidance or control in order be productive. If the manager believes Vanessa cannot work effectively under his supervision, he would adopt a top down approach to her work and monitor her progress. The manager’s attitude towards Vanessa reflects his belief that she requires such direction in order to be successful which will affect his leadership in terms of how willing or reluctant he is to delegate tasks and empower her to make decisions for herself.
Theory Y also suggests that employees can be independent and self-motivated if they are given the right environment. If Vanessa is a manager and she believes that Vanessa has potential but needs guidance, he would be more open to working with her. The manager could provide meaningful feedback, coaching opportunities and autonomy for certain tasks in order to help her grow. This allows him to foster an environment where both parties feel comfortable working together while also recognizing each other’s strengths so that they can maximize their productivity as a team.
