Discussion question # 2 w1
Meilaender distinguishes between being born and being created by differentiating how two individuals intend to have children. This is in contrast with IVF, which uses cells taken from other donors than the mother or father. He believes that there is value placed on knowing one’s biological roots – for example, genetic information about inherited traits – as this contributes to understanding one’s identity more fully.
I do agree with Meilaender’s description as I think his points are valid. It is certainly true that having an intentional relationship between parents at conception results in stronger bonds within families; however, I do not believe that one way of forming a family should be seen as better than another – whether through traditional or alternative means – since each type will bring its own unique set of joys and challenges for those involved.
