Discussion 4.1 – supplemental protein and amino acids
Although protein and amino acids supplements may be beneficial for athletes, or anyone looking to increase muscle mass, they can also pose risks. Supplements that contain diuretic ingredients can lead to dehydration, which could cause serious health issues if not taken care of. These products may also cause overload of the kidneys and GI distress, due to excessive amounts of amino acids like tryptophan and leucine.
People with food allergies or sensitivities may be concerned about the fact that protein/amino acids supplements often come from animals. Studies have also shown that too many protein supplements can cause a decrease in kidney function, which could lead to health problems over the long term. Because many brands don’t have a regulatory system, there are always risks that the formulations they use may not conform to what is on their labels.
