Introduction: Through academic service learning, students have the opportunity to apply what they learned in class and work with community groups. These experiences are important because they provide students with practical experience as well as help them develop new skills. This paper will be a reflection on my experience as a service learner and the connections between it and two of my course objectives. 1.7 Uses goal-directed processes in information transmission and assimilation. 3.4 Analyze patient safety and health goals.
Service Learning experience: On February 10, I participated in a Zoom Meeting via virtual Zoom. A group of nursing students were present to discuss their plans for completing an ASN degree in order to enter the field. Protecting yourself from Covid-19 was the topic of discussion.
Connect to Course Objectives. Goal-directed process are essential in information transmission and assimilation. This service learning opportunity allowed me to put these skills into practice in real-life scenarios. I learned and understood new information through the Zoom meeting. The presenter was discussing ways one can protect themselves from Covid-19. I was able take notes, to ask questions, and to understand what the material meant. I was able to put the information that I learned in class into practice, which enhanced my learning.
Additionally, the service learning opportunity allowed for patients to be analyzed and implemented safety and patient health goals. Nursing students need to make sure that their patients have a healthy and safe environment. The Zoom meeting covered a variety of ways one can protect himself from Covid-19. It is crucial for both personal and patient safety. These safety and health goals are an integral part of nursing practice. This learning experience offered a chance to apply these skills in a real-world setting.
Service Learning Experience: This service experience met the community’s needs. It provided information regarding how to avoid Covid-19. It is vital that this information be available, especially during times of ongoing pandemics, to help prevent further spread. This information can be shared with nursing students who are soon to enter the field. It will help ensure that the healthcare professionals in the area know how to safeguard themselves and their patients.
Civic responsibility/civic engagement: Service learning provided an opportunity for individuals to develop civic responsibility. People can take steps to safeguard themselves from Covid-19 and protect others around them. This is an essential part of being a citizen of society.
Conclusion: The service learning experience allowed students to put the classroom knowledge into practice. This experience was also a community resource, providing advice on Covid-19 prevention and encouraging civic participation. I was able to learn new skills, and apply what I learned in class into a real-world situation. Participating in service learning opportunities is important as it provides valuable experience and helps to improve skills.
