I will articulate my beliefs, assumptions, and values related to the concept of “person.”
The concept of person to me means that everyone is special and worthy of dignity and respect. People should be considered as individuals, taking into account not only their physical health but also their mental, emotional and spiritual well-being. Each person’s experiences, beliefs and values will influence their view of the world, their health, and how they perceive it.
Empathy is one of my core values. I think this is an essential aspect of caring for others. Understanding the perspectives and experiences of others will help us better serve their needs. Aside from the value of autonomy, I believe individuals have control over their health and wellbeing. Healthcare providers must empower patients to make informed choices about their care.
My personal clinical experience as a nurse assistant at a long-term facility was a direct reflection of my values, beliefs and assumptions. When I cared for an elderly woman in terminal illness, it struck me how highly she valued her autonomy and had control of her own life. Even with her limited physical abilities, she continued to make every effort to be involved in her life and keep her independence. Her resilience and determination struck me, and I had a profound respect for her.
It was important for me to take the time to understand what she was going through and to truly listen. I could then provide care that was specific to her values and needs. She enjoyed gardening and I supported her in doing so, even though she was physically challenged. Also, I gave her information on her health and possible treatment options to help her make an informed decision about her care. I learned from this experience that it is important to treat individuals as complete beings. To do so, you must consider their individual perspectives and take into consideration their independence and autonomy.
