For your state, development of standards for nursing practice
In Pennsylvania, the process of developing nursing standards of practice begins with the Board of Nursing publishing a statement outlining its intention to create new or revised standards. After that, the Board publishes an explanation statement which includes details about how interested parties can take part in the process of developing standards.
Following this, the Board needs to solicit input from other organizations that are related to nursing practice (such as universities and professional associations). They then create a draft document that outlines changes and updates proposed to the existing regulations. An appointed committee reviews the draft before it’s submitted to the board. Once approved, these standards become effective immediately and are published on the website of both Pennsylvania’s Department of Health and Board of Nursing.
