This issue raises many ethical and social issues that I believe must be considered. On the one hand, I believe it is important to respect an individual’s autonomy and wishes; however on the other hand this must always be balanced against moral concerns around end of life decision-making and potential implications for those left behind.
Additionally, the potential for exploitation or abuse (especially in vulnerable populations) cannot be ignored – particularly when discussing topics such as assisted suicide which could put people at risk of pressure from family members or others who may seek to benefit financially from a premature death.
Also, it is important to consider how early termination might affect palliative care delivery. Practitioners may see these strategies as a threat their jobs security and patient relationships. Although autonomy is paramount to any discussion about euthanasia concerns, careful consideration must also be given to wider consequences before making decisions related this sensitive subject.
