Theoretical lens and conceptual and theoretical frameworks for | RSCH 8301 – Qualitative Reasoning and Analysis | Walden University
The role of a theoretical or conceptual framework in qualitative research is to guide the examination of a particular phenomenon, providing the researcher with an organized structure for collecting data and analyzing results (Ravitch & Carl, 2021). Theoretical frameworks are based on existing theories within an area of study that allow researchers to develop meaningful hypotheses while conceptual frameworks often stem from personal knowledge and beliefs sourced in both literature and one’s own experience (Rubin & Rubin, 2012; Ravitch & Carl, 2021). Researchers can use this combination to help them design their research problems by specifying the factors that should be considered when studying a phenomenon.
For example when studying media effects on public opinion, Social Influence Theory may be used as the basis for understanding how people’s thoughts can be influenced by group dynamics (Ravitch & Carl, 2021). Other concepts, such as positive psychology and creativity, might be useful topics to examine personal growth in difficult times. Language development models can also help illuminate areas that need further assessment.
