Assignment – letters/emails to or interview with a legislator
To accomplish this task I will select Advocacy Option #2. Three letters and emails will be sent to identified federal and state legislators. To begin, I must research the topic or message I want to cover in my letters. American Nurses Association Federal Legislative Priorities 2019 is a good resource to help you determine which topics are most important for communicating with legislators.
When I choose my topic(s), and have identified the legislator(s), I will start to write my emails/letters. It is crucial to be concise (not more than one page), to mention specific bills related to the topic you’re discussing, and to relay personal experiences if possible.
It is a good idea to add any references at end of every letter/email in APA format. If possible, avoid writing form letters/emails so legislators can easily notice what you wrote. After completing all three sections, a one-page reflection about my advocacy experience through multiple letters/emails on various topics that impact healthcare providers and patients should be included.
