Final individual project – interview assignment
My most unexpected answer was the one where my interviewee described how discrimination and prejudice they experienced at work due to their ethnicity or race. It was something I hadn’t considered, but it helped me to see how difficult it is to appreciate the diversity of identity groups. This information made me think differently about discrimination and workplace diversity. It also highlighted the importance of understanding and appreciating differences among people from different backgrounds.
The identity group faces unique problems that are not easily apparent to people who don’t have the same identity. One example was the story of my interviewee who described how discrimination against them at work had been experienced because they were black or Asian. It was something that I hadn’t considered before, and it has allowed me to gain an understanding of the experiences others might have. Additionally, the individual shared insights into the impression they felt when interacting with people from different backgrounds and identities than theirs – which provided an enlightening perspective on how diversity can benefit society as a whole.
My interviewee’s knowledge has influenced my interaction with this group because it has enabled me to be more knowledgeable and approachable. To promote equality and inclusion in the workplace we need to create an environment that encourages people to feel secure and valued, regardless of their past. Course Material
