Week 15 – reading/reflection – due by 12/10 @ 9:30am | AA_S 0322 | San Francisco State University
Lin Kong is the one who expresses the most sympathy of all three characters. The doctor is married to Manna Wong but is still in love and waiting to receive a divorce decree from Shuya. His situation, while not ideal, is understandable as he was not able to obtain a divorce during the Cultural Revolution due to restrictions on marriage and family laws imposed by Mao Zedong’s government. He knows that Shuya is not going to be his wife, and has no plans to get back together. However, Lin still wants to talk to Shuya out of respect for their past. Lin also has grown distant with Manna because of their differing personalities and their personal frustrations about his commitment problems with Shuya. Lin continues to try his best to resolve these differences. Lin hopes that this will allow them both peace at home. Lin does not shirk responsibility nor run from his duties as husband or father. It’s clear that despite all tribulations put his way – Lin exhibits selfless compassion towards those around him showing empathy understanding each ones respective predicaments . You can see this level of care throughout the entire project. The admiration for his kindness, kind-heartedness and humility is highly commendable.
