Promiscuous mode is a setting that allows a network interface card to accept all packets sent over the network and not just those addressed to it. Wireshark, a network traffic analyzer like Wireshark can capture all traffic on the network and not only the traffic addressed to a specific NIC.
The “Name Resolution of Network Layer names” in the Capture > Options dialog allows Wireshark to resolve IP addresses to hostnames, making it easier to identify the devices on the network. This can be used to capture network traffic, as it allows for easier understanding of its source and destination.
Network switches are devices that link multiple computers on a network. They forward data packets from the source device to the destination computer based on their Media Access Control (MAC). Network hubs connect multiple computers on the network and send all data packets back to each connected device. By forwarding only data packets to their intended destination devices, switches limit network traffic visible to Wireshark, while hubs transmit all packets.
