An analysis of current events
In recent years, we have witnessed unacceptable behavior from police officers. Breonna Taylor was a victim of police misconduct and was shot several times more after being forced into her apartment by police. George Floyd, who was under police arrest at the time of Floyd’s death (Dreyer et al. Another police incident which caused a lot tension was the one that occurred in 2020. George died after the officer placed his neck on George’s throat, despite George telling police that he was suffering from breathing difficulties. These incidents sparked demonstrations to stop police cruelty against African Americans and people of color. America’s racial prejudice was one reason why police were brutally treating African Americans.
Using the behavioral theory, which states that individual and environmental interaction greatly shapes a person’s personality (Curtin & McGarty, 2016). George Floyd received treatment based on the way he was treated by his environment and other people. African Americans have been second-class citizens of the country they come from since their infancy. African Americans have no rights to human dignity because of their inferior status. It could be a result that the horrendous act was committed by police officers against African Americans. Floyd, being black, was not eligible for human rights.
To determine whether George Floyd was subject to inhumane or brutal treatment, one can use trait theory. Substantial evidence reveals a strong link between African Americans and crime (Rosenfeld & Fornango, 2017). Many African Americans have been more violent than any other ethnic group, which is why we need to remember that there are many of them. These data informed police officers’ actions. The police officers involved in this case treated him as a danger to the public. He used excessive force, but he didn’t realize he was hurting his victim.
Thirdly by applying psychoanalytic theory, we can infer that the police actions might have been informed by his childhood experience and other unknown, conscious desires (Curtin & McGarty, 2016). It is possible that the accused police officer was raised in a racist environment. As a child, he unconsciously developed prejudices based on race and was hostile to African America. He didn’t pay attention to the victim, and tragically ended his life.
