Gun violence has been a growing problem in America, and it is now threatening the safety of communities. Gun violence is responsible for over 38,000 deaths each year. An additional 85 000 people sustain minor and serious injuries. Many are left reliant on family members for care, which can impact their productivity. American Public Health Association (N. D.). It is concerning because every life must be protected from evils. It is not surprising that guns used in such horrific acts of violence can be obtained from many different sources. Guns are often purchased directly from licensed gun dealers. Some guns are purchased from authorized gun dealers in the country. Others are illegally sold to unsuspecting individuals by bad apple dealers. It is important to note that licensed gun dealers have the responsibility of providing firearms for security purposes. However, bad apple dealers only care about their profits. Gun violence can take many forms. These guns can be used to commit crimes, such as robbery, theft and violence. They can also be used to commit suicide or kill innocent people. To keep our community safe, it’s important that doctors report people with mental illness to Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearm Agency. It will enable them to seize guns from the uninsured. All gun dealers must conduct thorough background checks before issuing guns.

Many statistics indicate that there is an increase in mass shootings. These examples are just a few of the reasons gun ownership should be limited (Bogus 2017). It helps to fight such ills like death, injury and emotional harm to victims and the entire population.

Gun owners in America can become violent because of mental illness. Sandy Hook Elementary’s schizophrenic brains were an example. It resulted over 26 people being killed. His severe emotional distress led to him telling stories about elderly women who had been shooting recklessly. James Holmes (the Colorado theater gunman) is known to have visited a psychiatrist that specializes in schizophrenia. Moreover, historical information since 1970 about assailants reveals that 60 percent of the perpetrators have links with delusions, depressions, and acute paranoia, among other mental problems (Metzl & MacLeish, 2015). These facts show that guns don’t pose any danger and are safe. However, guns should not be placed in the hands mentally ill. It is vital that the country ensures safety for its citizens by conducting thorough, ethical assessments of all those who plan to buy guns or already have them.
